Title 45 - Photo & Directory Information
Directory Information
The Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects student education records from disclosure without parent/guardian or eligible student (age 18 or older) consent. An exception allows educational agencies to disclose certain “directory information” without consent. This information can only be disclosed if “it would not generally be considered harmful, or an invasion of privacy is disclosed.”
Examples of how this information may be used include but are not limited to honor roll and recognition lists, PTA membership, school play and concert programs, graduation programs and sports activity sheets (such as football showing the weight and height of team members).
Photo/Video Media Release
Photographs and/or videos of your child may be taken by school staff or individuals authorized by the Central Islip School District during school hours, school-sponsored events, and extracurricular activities. These images may be used in district publications such as newsletters, on the district website, and across official social media platforms to highlight student achievements and school activities.
The Central Islip School District also live streams various events, including but not limited to, athletic competitions, concerts, theatrical performances, graduation ceremonies, and moving-up ceremonies. By participating in these events, you acknowledge and grant permission for your child to appear in live-streamed content. Please note that it is not possible to exclude individual students from live broadcasts.
Important Note: The school district cannot restrict media or community organizations from photographing or interviewing students at public events held off school property, such as sports games, concerts, or plays.
Parents who do not desire to release any of the above directory, photo or video information must make a specific request in writing to the Superintendent of Schools by September 15th. If September 15th falls on a holiday or weekend requests will be accepted the following school day. Failure to make such a request shall be deemed consent to release, provide or publish the directory information.
Opt-Out Requests must be in writing and mailed to:
