Charter School Impact

Message from the Superintendent

October 16, 2025

Dear Central Islip Community,

As you may have heard, yesterday the State University of New York approved the application for a new charter high school to be housed in Central Islip, with an anticipated opening for fall 2027. We are extremely disappointed by this decision, as the introduction of another charter school will divert millions of dollars away from our own school district and the 7,800 students that we serve. Additionally, the application was submitted without collaboration or input from our district or the greater community.

With that said, however, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing the best education possible for the students of Central Islip. This includes providing a wide variety of programs and services that accommodate all learners, as well as supporting our talented teaching staff who hold the credentials and experience needed to guide our students toward success.

I would like to thank our elected officials, as well as members of our own Central Islip school community who advocated on our district’s behalf over the past several months. As we look ahead, I look forward to our continued collaboration as we work to uphold the quality, equity and stability of our public schools for all families we serve.

I will continue keep our community updated as we learn more about the charter school’s impact on our own district. Thank you for your continued participation and support of our district.

Sincerely,
Dr. Sharon Dungee
Superintendent of Schools
