The district participates in the National School Lunch Program and provides nutritious lunches for children, thereby contributing to their daily dietary requirements. The program also includes provisions for free or reduced price meals for eligible students. An approved application form for the current year must be submitted to the Main Office of any school no later than October 20. Forms and eligibility information for the program are available at each school and at the Cafeteria Office (631-348-5000 ext. 1038) throughout the school year.
By encouraging good eating habits and offering menus carefully devised for nutritional as well as taste appeal, the program endeavors to function as an integral part of the entire educational program. Prior to the start of each month, the district issues the school lunch menu, detailing each day’s meal offering in the school cafeteria. A trained staff is responsible for planning and preparing the district’s breakfast/lunch program. Average total fat content is calculated on a weekly basis every month. Fat Free chocolate and strawberry milk, 1% milk, and 100% fruit juice are available every day. A note is required from parents for students who cannot tolerate milk. Lunch are provided to all students at a minimal cost. Salad and Sandwiches are also available, in addition to our regular lunch menu, as well as for after school program snacks. Milk, other beverages and assorted snacks are available for students who bring lunches that are prepared at home. A computerized Point of Sale Register System is in place. This system enables parents to pre-pay their children’s breakfast and lunch, and gives them ability to track the food items their children are purchasing.
Under an expanded 'Healthy Start Initiative,' Breakfast in the Classroom is available free of charge to all students grades K-12.
