Universal Pre-K Program
The Universal Prekindergarten (UPK) program in the Central Islip School District, supported by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), offers free prekindergarten for eligible four-year-old children. The UPK initiative, funded through both state and federal sources, aims to provide early learning opportunities that promote school readiness, focusing on social, cognitive, and emotional development aligned with New York’s Prekindergarten Learning Standards.
Central Islip is among several districts receiving significant state funding to expand these essential services, ensuring more full-day placements are available to children in need. The district’s UPK program is part of NYSED’s broader goal to reduce educational disparities by reaching underserved populations, making high-quality early education accessible to more families.
Although enrollment in UPK is voluntary and is based on a lottery due to high demand, the program offers a structured yet flexible environment in either district classrooms or collaborating community organizations. These programs must adhere to standards that support child-centered, developmentally appropriate learning, preparing children to successfully transition to kindergarten. For additional information, families can consult the NYSED website or contact Anthony Alfano Elementary School's Main Office for specific program details.
