Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) is a New York State funded program specifically designed for 4-year-olds not eligible for kindergarten. Each year, the Central Islip School District invites eligible children who reside in the district to apply for the Pre-K (UPK) Lottery. Visit our web page in January for up-to-date information.

For kindergarten, children must be 5 years old on or before December 1 to be eligible to register.

New York State Education Law (Section 3205) states that children who turn 6 years old on or before December 1 are required to attend instruction in September of that school year.  Children who turn 6 years old after December 1 are required to attend school the following September.

Information about kindergarten registration will be available on the Central Registration webpage in January.

Please use the "School Age Calculator" above to determine the year your child will be eligible to start school in September of that school year.
