Asbestos Notice (AHERA)

Asbestos Notice (AHERA)

In 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), which requires school districts to annually inspect and identify asbestos-containing building materials, and to notify those who have access to the buildings of the condition of the asbestos. Additionally, a Management Plan must be developed outlining how the district intends to control the potential for exposure in asbestos fibers and maintain the materials in a safe condition.

The Central Islip School District historically conducts its annual inspection during the month of February. In general, our school buildings, asbestos containing materials are distributed in various locations and include floor tiles and insulation which are in areas not readily accessible to building occupants or students. As determined by our Management Plan and ongoing inspections, our buildings are free from friable asbestos- containing materials.

A copy of the district’s Management Plan is on file for review at each school as well as at the District Administration Building, Buildings, Grounds and Security Office, 50 Wheeler Road, Central Islip, New York, 11722. Individual building inspection reports are on file in each principal’s office.
