Naming Criteria and Procedures for District Buildings and Grounds

The following criteria and procedures reflect the Central Islip School District's policies regarding the naming of all district buildings, grounds, identifiable portions of buildings/rooms, and outdoor areas, as well as schools or programs within the district. Scroll down for the nomination form after reviewing the Criteria and Process

Criteria:

  1. Reputation and Support:
The proposed name should enhance the district's reputation and increase public understanding and support for Central Islip School District and its programs by honoring a well established and well known individual or group that has made considerable contributions to the Central Islip School District and Community.

  2. Honoring Individuals:
The proposed name should honor an individual with a significant and definable connection to the district's history, academic programs, public service, or development priorities and meet the criteria exampled below. Facilities will generally not be named after individuals who are currently living and/or employed by the Central Islip School District.

  3. Clarity:
The name should avoid causing public confusion about the location or function of the designated building, area, or school. Instead, it should help visitors easily identify, locate, and use the facility.

  4. Commemoration of Deceased Employees:
Naming a building, room, outdoor area, or athletic facility after a deceased employee is reserved for those who made a significant contribution to the Central Islip School District and community. While we all share in the profound sadness of an employee's passing, this honor will only be bestowed on individuals who have had a major impact on the district and its community.

  5. Due Diligence:
Each naming opportunity will be thoroughly reviewed, including a full background check of the honoree, to ensure there are no historical or ethical issues associated with naming the facility.

Specific Examples of a profound impact worthy of facility naming:

  • Historical Figures: Famous historical figures whose lives have contributed to the arts, advanced human knowledge or made other contributions to humanity, even if those figures had no connection with the institution.
  • Scientific Pioneers:  Central Islip Alumni or Community Members who made revolutionary discoveries that transformed our understanding of the world and led to advancements in science and technology.
  • Philanthropists:  Central Islip Alumni or Community Members who have made significant financial contributions to support education, research, or other charitable causes, often leading to the creation or improvement of institutions and programs.
  • Community Leaders:  Central Islip Alumni or Community Members who have dedicated their lives to serving their communities, advocating for social change, or fostering positive relationships, whose contributions have enriched the lives of the entire community.
  • Founding Fathers/Mothers:  Central Islip Alumni or Community Members who have played a critical role in establishing an institution or organization, whose vision and leadership have shaped its growth and development.
  • Athletic Programs:  Central Islip Alumni or Community Members who have played a critical role in establishing local athletic programs for Central Islip youths.  The Central Islip Alumni or Community Member would have founded the program, volunteered in the role of coach, manager, facilitator, etc. over the course of a lifetime of working in that program making it available to children at little or no cost and not as an employee of the program.
  • Community Civil Rights Activists:  Central Islip Alumni or Community Members whose tireless efforts fought for equality and justice, leaving a lasting impact on our community.
  • Employees:  Central Islip School District employees who dedicated their entire career and life to establishing new programs, enhancing the students education/experience through new programs and opportunities and volunteering their time to the school district over the course of a lifetime.
