Naming Criteria and Procedures for District Buildings and Grounds
The following criteria and procedures reflect the Central Islip School District's policies regarding the naming of all district buildings, grounds, identifiable portions of buildings/rooms, and outdoor areas, as well as schools or programs within the district. Scroll down for the nomination form after reviewing the Criteria and Process.
Criteria:
-
Reputation and Support:
The proposed name should enhance the district's reputation and increase public understanding and support for Central Islip School District and its programs by honoring a well established and well known individual or group that has made considerable contributions to the Central Islip School District and Community. -
Honoring Individuals:
The proposed name should honor an individual with a significant and definable connection to the district's history, academic programs, public service, or development priorities. Facilities will generally not be named after individuals who are currently employed by the Central Islip School District. -
Clarity:
The name should avoid causing public confusion about the location or function of the designated building, area, or school. Instead, it should help visitors easily identify, locate, and use the facility. -
Commemoration of Deceased Employees:
Naming a building, room, outdoor area, or athletic facility after a deceased employee is reserved for those who made a significant contribution to the Central Islip School District and community. While we all share in the profound sadness of an employee's passing, this honor will only be bestowed on individuals who have had a major impact on the district and its community. -
Due Diligence:
Each naming opportunity will be thoroughly reviewed, including a full background check of the honoree, to ensure there are no historical or ethical issues associated with naming the facility.
Procedure:
-
Submission of Proposal:
A recommendation and justification for the proposed name should be submitted using the form provided below. -
Superintendent’s Review:
Upon approval by the Superintendent of Schools, the recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Education for review and endorsement. -
Confidential Review Process:
Given the sensitive nature of these decisions, all stages of the proposal, review, and recommendation process will be conducted confidentially, in executive session, to avoid potential misunderstandings. -
Coordination of Recognition:
The Superintendent of Schools and Director of Facilities will oversee the design and installation of recognition plaques, as well as coordinate ribbon-cutting and naming ceremonies.
