About the Central Islip & Islandia Community

Welcome to Central Islip and Islandia—two neighboring communities in Suffolk County, Long Island, that blend rich history, cultural diversity, and forward-thinking development. These communities are not only places to live—they are places to grow, connect, and thrive.

History of Central Islip

Central Islip’s story begins long before suburban homes and baseball stadiums. Originally inhabited by the Secatogue tribe, part of the Algonquin-speaking peoples, the area was a natural haven of forests and streams. European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and by the 1800s, Central Islip had become a quiet agricultural community.

The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1842 transformed the area into a transportation and commercial hub. But the most defining chapter began in 1889, with the opening of the Central Islip State Hospital—later known as the Central Islip Psychiatric Center. This massive institution, which at its peak housed over 10,000 patients, was one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in the U.S. Patients worked the land, built furniture, and helped sustain the hospital’s self-sufficient campus, which eventually spanned over 1,000 acres and included more than 100 buildings.

The hospital’s decline began in the 1960s with the rise of deinstitutionalization and community-based mental health care. It officially closed in 1996, and its vast grounds were repurposed for civic, residential, and commercial use. Today, the site is home to the Alfonse M. D’Amato Federal CourthouseTouro Law CenterFairfield Properties Ballpark, and several residential communities.
