Special Recognition! Jason Schafer, Tyler White Honored at Town of Islip
The Town of Islip honored Cordello Elementary School safety officer Jason Schafer for his life-saving heroics involving fifth grader Tyler White during a board meeting on Tuesday, June 10.
Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recognized Mr. Schafer before inviting Tyler to the podium. With confidence, Tyler approached the microphone and simply said, “Thank you, Mr. Jay!”
The incident occurred about a month ago, when Tyler was taking a state test and paused to take a sip of water—unaware the bottle cap was still on. He began choking, prompting his teacher to quickly alert security. Mr. Schafer responded immediately and successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver.
Mr. Schafer and Tyler were also recognized at the June 9 Central Islip Board of Education meeting, where the Board and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Sharon A. Dungee presented Mr. Schafer with a certificate honoring his quick response and composure in a high-stress situation.
News outlets including Newsday, NBC New York, and PIX11 were in attendance to capture the moment.
