CIHS yes to dress

On Tuesday, May 13, the Latina Mentoring Initiative proudly hosted a "Dress to Impress" prom event, offering our high school students an unforgettable opportunity to choose from an extensive selection of prom attire and accessories. Students explored racks of stunning dresses and tables filled with shoes, clutch bags, and jewelry. Our male students also enjoyed selecting from a wide array of suits, ties, and dress shirts.

LMI Connects Latina Youth with Mentorship and Healthcare Career Exploration

Ms. Veliz Calderón and Ms. Munguia will serve as site coordinators for the Latina Mentoring Initiative (LMI) at the High School. LMI is an exciting new initiative within the New York State Mentoring Program (a program under CCF) in collaboration with the Governor’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Women’s Affairs, and Latina leaders from government, community, and corporate sectors. Together, they have come together to build LMI to support young Latinas throughout New York.

The mission of LMI is to connect positive, caring Latina mentors with Latina youth, empowering and uplifting future Latina leaders, ages 8 to 24. Through mentorship, the program fosters personal and professional growth by developing soft skills, building confidence, and nurturing aspirations. Learn more about LMI here.

On Tuesday, May 6, young Latina students participated in an inspiring trip to Elmhurst Hospital to explore careers in healthcare. Students had the opportunity to learn about the hospital’s community programs, practice CPR, and acquire life-saving skills to use in emergencies.

One of the highlights was hearing from a panel of Latino and Latina doctors specializing in both mental health and traditional medicine, including pulmonary and pediatric care. Their stories of resilience and dedication encouraged students to pursue their dreams and remain steadfast, even when faced with challenges.
