O'Neill Students Write to North Carolina Schools Affected by Hurricane Helene
Devastation wreaked havoc across the southeast when Hurricane Helene made landfall, causing thousands of people to lose their homes and personal belongings.
Mrs. Tara DeCola, a speech pathologist at O’Neill Elementary School, could not stop thinking about all students whose lives were altered in a matter of days.
“My sister lives in Statesville, which isn’t too far from where most of the damage was caused in North Carolina,” DeCola said. “She sent me pictures of areas that were affected, and it made me think of all the kids. Their worlds were turned upside down.”
She immediately told other teachers her idea to have students write cards to send to schools that were in the line of destruction, including Mrs. Jennifer Danzi, a third grade teacher at O’Neill.
Her students carefully colored in white doilies to mimic the outline of a sun, writing “sending sunshine,” across the top.
Along with the doilies, Mrs. Danzi’s students wrote cards to students, encouraging them to stay strong and to remain resilient during tough times.
It was not just Mrs. Danzi and Mrs. DeCola that participated in this event. The entire O’Neill Elementary School made the effort to join in.
“It’s really a no-brainer for our school to give back in this way,” Mrs. Kristine LoCascio, O’Neill principal said. “It’s our duty to serve others, from here to across the entire coast.”
Mrs. DeCola sent an email to the principal of Jonathan Valley Elementary in Waynesville, N.C. to let her know cards were on the way. The response brought tears to her eyes.
“I cannot thank you enough for thinking of us and reaching out during such a challenging time,” Mrs. Brooks wrote. “The cards will be a ray of sunshine during this time. Please thank all your students. I am endlessly appreciative.”
O’Neill will be sending cards to Jonathan Valley, Hendersonville Elementary, and Rosman Elementary.
