Musketeer Monday: Karen Booker
She is a shining reflection of Central Islip High School and a stellar representative of her hometown community. Musically talented, dedicated to her school, kind to those around her, and committed to excellence in pursuing her goals — meet Central Islip High School senior Karen Booker.
As a member of Central Islip High School’s Sweet Adelines and Concert Choir, Booker showcases her vocal talents, performing meticulously curated selections alongside her peers. During her junior year, she served as a seamstress and co-section leader for Sweet Adelines and is currently the Concert Choir president. Booker is also a captain of Show Choir and has appeared on Central Islip’s Main Stage, performing in The Wiz, Beauty and the Beast, and Shrek the Musical.
Booker’s dedication extends beyond the stage. She served as secretary of the NAACP’s Youth Council and has volunteered with Women 2 Women to help create a safe Halloween experience for Central Islip’s elementary students. She and her friends have also organized neighborhood cleanups, and she is always ready to lend a hand. “Sometimes I’ll just pop in to participate and help wherever I can,” she said.
When asked what being a member of Team Musketeer means to her, Booker explained: “Being a Musketeer means making connections, building relationships, creating memories, and growing up in a special community. I’m very grateful to do all of this within the CI community.”
Booker gives special shout-outs to some of her most influential teachers, beginning with Mr. McKenzie. “Mr. McKenzie is truly one of the kindest people I’ve ever met. He always makes sure I’ve eaten and is always there for me when I need someone to talk to. His kindness inspires me to spread positivity. He will be truly missed in his retirement. I also want to thank my choir directors, Mrs. O’Connor and Mr. Anthony, for showing me what true dedication looks like. Choir and participating in clubs have given me the confidence to put myself out there and have enriched my high school experience.”
She also names her role models: Mr. McKenzie, Mrs. O’Connor, Mr. Anthony, and her older brother, Yashaun Harris, a Central Islip High School alumnus.
Reflecting on her experience with Sweet Adelines and Concert Choir, Booker shared: “Joining Sweet Adelines was one of the best decisions I made in high school. I joined in my freshman year, and I’ve loved it ever since. The lessons, connections, and memories I’ve made there will always hold a special place in my heart. I love my big basses! I will truly miss it when I’m gone.
“In Concert Choir, I’ve made so many memories over the past three years. As choir president, it’s an amazing experience leading the choir to success, watching members grow vocally and emotionally, and rehearsing at a professional level. We have our fun and bonding moments too, and it’s wonderful to see students from different circles connect.”
Central Islip High School Sweet Adelines Director Theresa O’Connor and Concert Choir and Show Choir Director John Anthony describe Booker as an extraordinary student:
“Karen Booker is a shining example of the spirit and pride that define our school district. Intelligent, enthusiastic, personable, and caring, Karen actively contributes to a vibrant school community through her involvement in music, theater, and Women 2 Women. Her genuine pride in our daily achievements and heartfelt dedication to Central Islip make her a wonderful ambassador for our school, consistently showcasing just how special and welcoming our community truly is.”
