Musketeer Monday: Averie Johnson
She is a brilliant student who is actively involved at school and in her community. Meet O'Neill Elementary sixth grader Averie Johnson, this week's feature for Musketeer Monday.
Averie's favorite subject is English language arts (ELA). "When I was younger, I always read books, and I never stopped—I love to read and write," she explained.
Averie has a wide range of interests, both inside and outside the classroom. She sings alto with the O'Neill Elementary Chorus, plays the flute with the O'Neill Band, serves as captain of her school's Safety Patrol team, and participates in Dr. Dungee's Student Council Roundtable. Reflecting on her role in student council, Averie said, "It's an awesome experience because I vouch for what kids want. When kids want to change a bunch of things, and you make that change, then kids are happy."
Asked how she feels about homework, Averie candidly but humorously stated, "I really don't like homework—no kid does. You go to school a lot of hours a day, so homework is not fun."
Outside of school, Averie is active in her local community theater group, where she has taken on roles in musicals. Most recently, she portrayed Maxine in Beetlejuice, which she described as "super fun."
Averie is a twin, with her brother Avian (she's the older of the two), and she speaks fondly of her two younger siblings: Emery, 9, and Maverick, 6.
Proud to be a Musketeer, Averie said, "It's super cool to be part of a school with so many opportunities, like field trips. I'm looking forward to middle school."
As she prepares to attend Reed Middle School in September, Averie hopes to join the volleyball team.
Sixth grade teacher Mrs. Portillo offered a glowing testimonial about Averie:
"Averie is an outstanding student who shines both academically and socially in the classroom. She is the Safety Patrol captain here at O'Neill and brings that leadership from the hallways right into our class. Averie is an exceptional student who completes all assignments beyond what is expected of her and prides herself on being an avid reader. I know I can always count on Averie to participate in our lessons, offering insightful responses and asking inquisitive questions to deepen her understanding. Ask any student in the classroom, and all would agree—Averie is a friend to everyone, demonstrating kindness, respect, and empathy. Learning that Averie was chosen as a Musketeer to represent CI came as no surprise because she is the epitome of what a stellar student should be."
