Jason Schafer, Tyler White Interviewed by News 12 Long Island
Last week, May Cordello Elementary School safety officer Jason Schafer provided immediate attention and help for a fifth grade student, Tyler White, who choked on his water bottle cap while testing.
Fortunately, Mr. Schafer was alerted quickly; he left his post, ran in to the room and proceeded to give White the heimlich. Moments later, the cap was dislodged and Tyler was okay.
Fast forward to Wednesday, when Cecilia Dowd, an award-winning journalist for News 12 Long Island, was in the building to interview Schafer, White and Dr. Nathaniel Marner, Cordello principal.
Tyler was able to recount the moment and describe what he felt once he realized the magnitude of the situation, and Mr. Schafer emphasized the importance of knowing how to act in a crisis.
